I made some changes to the autoconvert scripts that I use to get a first stab at photos from my EOS20D. Before I let dcraw do as much as possible of the conversion, but now instead I ask it to just dump the raw image in PAM format and let netpbm do all the real work.

Spider, don't walk

There's this traffic light in the block where I live, that has had these pretty spider webs for some time now, and that I've been wanting to put into pixels... but when it's dark enough it's also too dark for the hand held shot. Well, not so much anymore. But the wind still caused some blur, and I need to practice my manual focusing a bit, because the AF is really lost with that little light and subtle details. But that's a mission for a time when I'm not falling asleep.

I got myself this year's xmas present a little early, when I both received notice of what the company xmas bonus will be and also saw this piece of glass had dropped 1 kSEK since the last time I looked. And today I got it in the mail.

Looks like the Image Stabilizer works pretty OK, making a hand held shot at 1/13 s shutter time when zoomed in fully to 105 mm focal length. Also, it looks like I need to clean the display of my laptop.

Walking on Omberg

A friend and I went on a walk with camera in hand in the southern parts of Omberg this afternoon, but unfortunately it started raining halfway counter-clockwise through the blue trail from the south up via "Hjässan", so we skipped the route down by the water on the return and decided to put our cameras away in case the rain got worse.

I tried some macro, using a +2 close-up filter on my not too sharp EF70-210/4. At f/4 it's insanely soft and blurry, at f/8 it's still quite bad, and even at f/16 it not much good.

Playing with the Gimp

I built the ufraw-gimp package from the latest sources, rather than the severely outdated version in FreeBSD ports. Now it doesn't catch a SIGSEGV in its guts while loading an image.

Since the Gimp is crippled to only 8 bits of colour depth per channel the import plugin has all the colour and exposure management knobs built in. I tried it with most knobs set to "auto" and turned the saturation knob up a bit.
